The National Crime Prevention Centre - Community Mobilization Program has provided Phoenix Transition Society with funding to continue with our efforts to prevent violence against women and children. We propose to develop educational materials that will address public opinion regarding racism, discrimination, and prevention of violence/sexual assault against women and children in Prince George and the surrounding communities.
Through direct participation and media information communities will have a chance to examine values and social structures and build on making their communities healthier and safer places for marginalized, vulnerable groups specifically women and children. Diverse groups will have the opportunity to be directly involved in developing the education prevention materials and will be empowered to create change as individuals and within their organizations or work place. The community will define the needs, issues and interests which will build on existing community skills, expertise and resources and create sustainability.
Through individual interviews, focus group discussions, and surveys we will gather information on what people in Prince George and the outlying communities think about violence, what contributes to violence, and how we can work towards eliminating violence. The information will help us determine what we can say to make a difference in people's attitudes, beliefs and behaviours to help stop violence.
Creating safer communities requires a long-term commitment from all of us. If you would like to be a part of this project please contact Sharon Hurd. Phone: 250 563 7305. Email: sharon.phoenix@shaw.ca
