This program provides services to children ages 3 to 18 who have witnessed abuse.
This program serves children who have witnessed violence or serious conflict in their life, usually the abuse of their mother by her partner.
The mandate of this program is also to assist victims of dating violence, and to promote community awareness of the impact that witnessing violence has on children.
Community agency and self referral.
Funded by the Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women's Services and The United Way.
Objectives
- To provide support services for children who have witnessed abuse. These services include services for individual children as well as for groups of children, i.e. age appropriate support groups.
- To assess the impact on children of the abuse witnessed, the group readiness of children, and the support needs of the parent who has been abused.
- To provide individual counseling for children who are not ready for group counseling and for children who need service when no group for their developmental age is available.
- To communicate with and support parents who are the survivors of abuse providing information about the services, and, where available, by providing support groups and individual counseling sessions.
- When possible, to provide for prevention activities in schools.
